How To Lay Good Floating Hardwood Floors
Floating hardwood floors are very versatile as they can be installed above virtually any kind of sub-floor because it does not actually touch or make contact with the floor. There are a few essential considerations which will determine the quality of result you can expect when you come to lay your floor. Firstly, the sub-floor on which the hardwood floor will be built should be thoroughly cleaned. Then, it is important that the surface must be made to be even.
This is usually not a problem as in most cases the floor will be even. only a very slight warping is allowed otherwise there will be serious difficulty. To test to see if the floor is level, you can lay a piece of board which you know to be level on top of the surface and see if any gaps appear. It is not advisable to use a spirit level as you will be testing too large an area for the result to be meaningful.
You can test the piece of board that you are using to test the floor with a spirit level, just to ensure that the surface is indeed completely level. If this works, it will be the best tool for testing the floor. To know whether there are gaps of any significant size, it is ideal to use a very dim light, and then to make sure that you use a bright light on the other side of the board. By doing so, this should allow you to see any clear gaps in between the board and the floor.
Floating hardwood floors need a flat surface, so if there is any significant gap in the existing floor, use a joint compound on the floor until it is level. Once again, the use of very dim and bright light will give you the best gauge of where the compound needs to be, and how much of it you need to create the level surface. As the floor does not touch the surface underneath, it can be laid in any direction you desire.
It is common to choose the direction in which light typically enters and flows through the room. If the room has only one door, it is also common to start at the point where people enter the room. Attaching the planks of wood to each other is the hardest part of laying a floating hardwood floor. This can be done by using wood glue, and it is important to ensure that you hold the wood level and in position until the glue has dried and the joint is set. Once, enough care is taken care of over this step, you can be successful at laying effective floating hardwood floors.
